8:30 a.m. Welcome from NMTA and WPPA leaders, George Harris and Eric Johnson
9:00 a.m. Hear from Randy Dorn, our state’s top superintendant, on what he and his office are doing to restore shop class in Washington State K-12 schools. Buoyed by an investment from NMTA, CorePlus continues to make progress with teachers and youngsters. What is his vision for this program? How is he prioritizing marine trades in our public schools? He will answer these questions and more during this session.
10:00 a.m. Paul Sorensen of BST Associates returns to offer an update on the economic state of affairs for Washington State’s recreational boating industry. Backed with fresh data from the marinas, he will review how things have fared since the last conference and offer a forecast on what he predicts for the future.
11:00 a.m. (Breakout Session) You may remember John Thorburn from his twelve plus years as Northwest Marine Trade Association’s Vice President. His presentation, “Social & Digital Marketing to Grow your Business in 2015,” will teach you the latest tips, tricks and trends to grow your online brand, build sales and extend your marketing dollars.
11:00 a.m. (Breakout Session) The Heat is on: Hot marinas – explained
Everyone, it seems, likes to complain about how “hot” marinas are. Spend some time with Jack Wilken of Seattle Boat Works as he shares his technical advice on corrosion that boaters face in marinas. Jack will answer questions about what makes a marina “hot” and how to identify the cause, as well as compare the different types of boat corrosion created in fresh, brackish, and saltwater marinas.
Noon Don Crace, head of Dale Carnegie Training, will focus this ninety-minute presentation on how to deliver world-class customer service. Mr. Crace uses facilitation (and not lectures) to deliver you to the Promised Land of exceptional customer service. Expect to leave with a custom plan to hold yourself accountable throughout the year.
2:00 p.m. (Breakout Session) Chris Copacino’s “Branded Communication: Talking to the Right and Communicating the Right Thing” will pick up where the previous session left off. This industry pro will offer insights into how to best engage your target audience by knowing who they are and what motivates them. He will help you navigate varied audiences, fragmented media channels and general communication noise. By the end of the hour, you will have a market-driven, integrated communications plan.
2:00 p.m. (Breakout Session) You can’t touch this! How to avoid electrocutions in your marina or boatyard
Did you know that electrocutions can occur with very low electricity in your water (as low as 6 milliamps)? What can you do to make your marina safe for swimmers? These weighty questions (and others) will be answered by Jack Wilken of Seattle Boat Works.
3:00 p.m. (Breakout Session) What a day in the life of a world-class marina looks like
Hear from three industry leaders about the makeup of their day. What are the techniques they use to keep their marina clean and green? Tracy McKendry and Lori Nantucci, representing the two Clean Marina of the Year winners, and Brian Kaloper join Aaron Barnett of Washington Sea Grant for a nuts-and-bolts approach to succeed in this hospitality industry.
3:00 p.m. (Breakout Session) A fresh take on this year’s Boatyard Permit
Brad Doll of the Tupper-Mack-Wells law firm will update NMTA and WPPA members on what implications this new permit has on boatyards and marinas in our state. Hear about this new permit as well as the plan we have to effectively advocate for you.
4:00 p.m. Stump the lawyer
Maritime legal eagles Bill DeVoe and Pegeen Mulhern will offer their services to you for this hour. This is a seminar where you set the agenda. Submit your questions beforehand and they will come prepared with the answers. Additionally, they will cover other areas such as how the Department of Revenue has implemented the derelict vessel law and what to do if a disaster strikes (including a fatality or fire).

9:00 a.m. Legislative Debrief and Tee-off for 2016
NMTA lobbyist Cliff Webster and Recreational Boating Association of Washington’s Doug Levy will unwrap the 2016 legislative session and review the current lay of the land. Plenty of audience participation follows Cliff and Doug’s opening remarks, do you have any pet peeves or head-scratchers about current laws and politicians? Get them answered here.
10:00 a.m. Habitat Conservation Plan: What you need to know for the next fifty years
If DNR-leasees are not familiar with the Habitat Conservation Plan, they will want to know what’s in store for them in this plan put forward by the Department of Natural Resources. For those who know a great deal about this subject, DNR will also explain where things currently stand and what the future of this plan may look like.
10:00 a.m. Prepare to leave the maze of healthcare
Hear from healthcare experts on the current state of the Affordable Care Act and all things healthcare. Attend this one and you will leave with a healthy understanding of what healthcare means for your company.
11:00 a.m. How to succeed where others have failed: Developing fruitful relationships with regulators
Hear from Terry Carten of Kulshan Services (former Dept. of Natural Resources employee and now private-sector consultant) on the best approach to creating strong working partnerships with state agencies. Expect to educate yourself on codes, statutes, rules, and more. Ultimately, the key is to work with – rather than against – agencies. He will show you how!
11:00 a.m. The art of selling sausage in Olympia
Peter Schrappen returns to the podium to offer the techniques that he deployed to pass the Marine Tourism Bill. Not only will you leave this seminar with the fundamentals that you can take back home to better advocate for our legislative priorities, but his training places special emphasis on sales techniques that work with lawmakers and your clientele.
