The new year marked continued volume growth at Washington’s Port of Tacoma. Breakbulk volumes grew 31 percent in January compared with the same month in 2012. Total tonnage at the port reached 1.63 million tons, a 22.5 percent gain.
Automobile imports increased 26 percent in January as car dealers built up their inventory, port officials said in a statement. Demand for autos is expected to improve this year as the U.S. economy slowly improves and pent-up demand drives consumers back to showrooms.
In January, 99 vessels called the Port of Tacoma, a 27 percent gain on January 2012 calls of 78.
