A bill that passed out of a U.S. House committee Wednesday contains $2.4 billion for Columbia River harbor and navigation projects.
Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler, who is in her first year on the Energy and Water Appropriations Subcommittee, helped secure the money.
“These funds guarantee the Columbia River is maintained and can continue transporting goods through Southwest Washington and to the rest of the globe,” according to a press release from her office.
Some of the money would provide for rehabilitation of the massive jetties at the mouth of the river that help maintain shipping through the dangerous Columbia Bar.
More than $42 million will go to small ports such as Chinook and Ilwaco for dredging.
The bill, part of a Department of Energy spending package, next heads to the full House.
