Inslee Says New I-5 Columbia River Bridge Must Include Light Rail

Associated Press, March 22, 2013, Seattle Times

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee is visiting Vancouver Friday to meet with local business leaders about plans for a new Interstate 5 over the Columbia River connecting with Portland.

Oregon recently approved putting in $450 million toward the project. Washington has to kick in a similar amount to secure federal funding.

Still in dispute is whether the bridge should extend Portland’s light-rail system into Vancouver.

Some lawmakers, including Republican Sen. Don Benton of Vancouver, say the state should reconsider whether the bridge project should include a light rail line. Inslee says that light rail is non-negotiable.
