ANACORTES – The Port of Anacortes is pleased to announce they have been awarded the 2012 Walter B. Jones award under the category of Excellence in Local Government by the United States Department of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The Port was nominated by Kay Reinhardt, of the Washington State Padilla Bay Foundation and Padilla Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. The award was made by Acting Director of NOAA Margaret A. Davidson.

The judging criteria for the award were:
• Effectiveness in advancing the goals of the Federal Coastal Zone Management Act (CZMA) at a local level;
• Effectiveness in increasing public awareness of coastal issues;
• Use of innovative approaches, techniques, and/or programs to advance the goals of the CZMA; and
• Ability of the agency/program to serve as a model for other local government efforts.

The NOAA awards, named after the late Congressman Walter B. Jones of North Carolina, are based on leadership, innovation, resourcefulness and the commitment to help balance the use of coastal and ocean resources in America. There are three different awards given each year; the Excellence in Local Government award is given to local governments who have inspired positive change in costal management.
This award was given to the Port of Anacortes based upon the coastal restoration efforts the Port has demonstrated in its clean ups and improvements of the Anacortes coastline; bringing what seemed to be a toxic coastline to the breath taking and welcoming coastline.
