The Port of Pasco commission has chosen its next executive director.
Commissioners unanimously decided Thursday to offer the position to Randy Hayden, currently the port’s director of planning and engineering, has worked there since 2000.
Executive Director Jim Toomey is retiring at the end of 2013, after nearly 22 years.
Commissioners met with a consultant in Vancouver, Wash., on June 12, to discuss strategic planning and the process for hiring a new executive director.
Commissioner Jim Klindworth said Hayden fits the description of what commissioners were looking for in their next director.
Hayden said he looks forward to continuing the tradition started by the commission, Toomey and port staff.
“I am humbled and honored by your decision,” he said.
Port commissioners also unanimously appointed Hayden as deputy executive director as of July 1. That will carry with it an annual salary of $120,000.
Hayden’s current salary is $117,000, Toomey said.
Hayden’s priorities will include industrial development and business recruitment, property acquisition and the plan to expand the Tri-Cities Airport terminal, said Commission President Jean Ryckman.
The airport expansion project requires work equivalent to two to three employees, although the port has not added staff, Ryckman said.
Commissioners plan to talk to the Tri-City Development Council to see if TRIDEC can help the port with business recruitment, she said.
Money remains the biggest stumbling block for property acquisition, Ryckman said. Commissioners discussed trading, selling or converting property currently owned by the port.
