The Washington State Department of Commerce is investing two million dollars to boost the economies in three counties, including Yakima County.
The department’s Community Economic Revitalization Board is dedicating that money to the port of Sunnyside for a wastewater treatment expansion.
The total comes out to about a million dollars.
Sunnyside is kicking five million in local and federal funds into the project.
The idea is to build a new pre-treatment area for the Darigold facility.
They estimate the new facility will create 25 new jobs for the Sunnyside area.
For the city, the wastewater expansions are a logical step forward.
“We’re in the heartland of agriculture and the food industry, and it’s a logical place for this kind of thing to grow,” said Jed Crowther with the Port of Sunnyside.
The Darigold facility already employs 137 people.
As a result of the new pre-treatment station, Darigold is expected to invest 22 million dollars into their Sunnyside location.
Washington’s Community Economic Revitalization Board has given loans and grants since 1982.
They’ve invested a total of 168 million dollars over those years to local jurisdictions.
