A company that services Railex’s train cars is on track for a new business location at the Port of Walla Walla’s Dodd Road Business Park.
Port commissioners authorized staff to move on building design and go out for bids on construction of a new building for Reefer Systems Inc., doing business as Midlands Carrier Transicold.
Employees for the company service the refrigerated rail cars for Railex. After every trip to the East Coast, the rail cars are individually inspected and serviced through Midlands employees. The regional branch of Midland’s, an Omaha-based company, is in Hermiston. Port Executive Director Jim Kuntz said many of the employees currently travel to Hermiston to pick up equipment, drive into Walla Walla for work at Railex, then return to Hermiston to return equipment, only to drive back up to the Tri-Cities and Walla Walla areas, where many of them live.
Kuntz said a local operation would increase efficiencies and serve as a compliment to Railex at the Dodd Road spot. Kuntz said Murar Engineering will proceed with design work on what is expected to be a pre-manufactured metal building over 3,000 square feet in size. Kuntz expects bids to open around June.
