It’s a simple line item…a relative pittance compared to the billions state lawmakers divvied up recently in drawing up a state budget for the next two years.
But that line item of $450,000 to demolish the old Carnation plant at the corner of Lincoln Avenue and South First Street is a big deal for Sunnyside.
Sen. Jim Honeyford (R-Sunnyside) confirmed this week that the state’s 34-page capital budget for the next biennium includes money to clear the Carnation site for future development.
“It’s huge for our community,” says Jay Hester, executive director for the Port of Sunnyside, which sought the funds. “I’m excited to get that property prepped and ready.”
