State to Move Derelict Vessels from Guemes Channel

Two derelict vessels, each 125 feet long, are being removed from Guemes Channel near Anacortes by the state Department of Natural Resources (DNR), officials announced today.

A DNR news release said the former Canadian Navy vessels, the Port de la Reine and the Port Quebec, had began to pull away from the old Shannon Point Seafoods pier and posed a threat to the environment, to navigation and to the nearby Guemes Ferry Dock.

DNR’s Derelict Vessel Removal Program had taken custody of the vessels April 1, after the ships’ owner failed to move then to a safer location as requested.

The vessels had been tied up for more than a decade at a dilapidated pier, the DNR said. They will be moved by Global Diving and Salvage to safer moorage at the Port of Seattle.
