WASHINGTON PUBLIC PORTS ASSOCIATION PRESENTS THE PORT OF EVERETT WITH THE 2022 ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP AWARD
OLYMPIA, WASHINGTON (MAY 16, 2022) – Each year, the Washington Public Ports Association (WPPA) recognizes the extraordinary achievements of ports across the state in the categories of job creation, community engagement, creative partnership, and environmental stewardship.
WPPA is pleased to recognize the achievements of the Port of Everett in their continued leadership in environmental stewardship of the Puget Sound, and the 2022 Environmental Stewardship Award from WPPA for the recently completed Bay Wood Shoreline Restoration & Cleanup highlights the Port’s dedication.
The Port of Everett continues to successfully accomplish its mission of economic development at former waterfront mill and industrial sites, enabled in large part by its comprehensive regulatory and environmental restoration strategy. The Bay Wood Shoreline Restoration & Cleanup is a prime demonstration of the Port’s ability to deliver transformational results using this coordinated approach.
This $2.3 million project, completed in partnership with the Department of Ecology, removed legacy contamination, accomplished 1,600 lineal feet of shoreline restoration, and another 2,300 lineal feet of upland buffer restoration to create new, protected nearshore habitat for salmon and other native wildlife at the mouth of the Snohomish River.
As a result, the Port was able to turn an effectively unused, unmarketable, contaminated waterfront property into a highly attractive, market-ready parcel now in development with a guarantee to generate up to 300 new family-wage jobs. This work was completed on a fast track in less than a year, and against the background of COVID-19 economic challenges. For details of the Port of Everett’s specific efforts on this project, see their full award application here.
